MS in Colour

By: MS In Colour
  • Summary

  • Multiple Sclerosis in Colour (AKA MS In Colour) is a podcast like no other. This podcast brings individuals of black heritage living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) into the conversation, where usually they would not be involved as much.

Multiple Sclerosis was first thought to only affect white Europeans many moons ago. Research has shown that MS is more prevalent in black people especially black women than once thought. However, our stories have been missing from many conversations.

The black community doesn't often encourage conversations about MS and the black MS community has low MS research and clinical trials participation rates due to a handful of barriers so they are often left out of the conversation.

That stops NOW! From the lived experiences of black MSers themselves to, family and medical professionals, new treatments, and research, we are bringing the conversation to the black MS community!

  • EPISODE 2 - HOW DOES MS AFFECT INDIVIDUALS OF BLACK HERITAGE?
    Nov 18 2023

Welcome to Episode 2 of MS In Colour, where we dive into how multiple sclerosis (MS) affects individuals of black heritage. In this episode, our host Natalie Busari interviews Dr IIya Kister, a renowned neurologist and clinical researcher at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. Dr Kister has been working at the NYU Multiple Sclerosis Center for over 20 years, with a focus on studying MS patients from diverse ethnic backgrounds.

Natalie and Dr Kister discuss the challenges and implications of MS research on black people, as historically, MS has been predominantly seen as a disease affecting white individuals. They explore the reasons behind the underrepresentation of black people in MS research and the potential cultural barriers that may contribute to this phenomenon.

The conversation delves into Dr Kister's study on black Americans with MS, specifically focusing on the re-emergence of B cells in patients using certain therapies. They examine the differences in response to treatments between African Americans and individuals of non-African descent, shedding light on the importance of understanding how MS manifests in different ethnic groups.

Additionally, Natalie shares her personal experiences and observations about MS in Africa and the need for more research to understand the prevalence and impact of the disease in the region. They explore the potential future directions of MS research, including the possibility of preventing the disease or finding more effective treatments.

Join us in this thought-provoking episode as we explore the intersection of MS and black heritage, uncovering new insights and understanding about this complex disease. Stay tuned for an enlightening conversation with Dr IIya Kister.
