• How to set boundaries and say no - she lived in FOUR countries before she finally learned how!
    Jun 25 2024

This week's guest, Camille Brattli, grew up in the Philippines in a very tight-knit family unit and church community.

There wasn't enough room for her to say no and be herself, so she spent her twenties living in Thailand, the Netherlands, and Norway before she finally gained her sense of self and learned how to say no.

Camille's story sheds light on ways that we can learn to identify when others are pressuring us to conform into people pleasing and she gives insight on how we can learn to deal with the discomfort inherent in saying no and setting boundaries.

  • Find Peace in the Midst of Pain, It's Okay to Beat on God's Chest, and Have a Grace Revolution!
    Jun 18 2024

This week, I am honored to be talking to Lana Jernigan, who helped raise a whole generation of youth group kids through her long tenure at a summer camp ministry near Fayetteville, NC called Camp Dixie!

Lana was one of the few adults who actually seemed to make sense to me when I was a teenager, so naturally, she made a huge impression on me and I thought it would be fun to have her on the show to reminisce together and to hear about the turning points in her life’s journey that brought her closer to a life of authenticity.

Lana is a mother, grandmother, and recently moved to Georgia to start a new adventure as Director of Operations for Trueface.

In this episode, Lana is going to get real with us about how peace and pain can co-exist in the middle of loss, why it’s ok to beat on God’s chest, and how God’s grace changes everything. I’m sure that by the end of this hour, we’re all going to be inspired by Lana’s story, which will prove that God loves us and wants to launch us into the dreams he has for us!

To celebrate ten episodes of the Becoming Who You Truly Are podcast, my friend Morgan Thompson asked me questions that you, the listeners, submitted!

We talk about a range of subjects from maturity, my new adventure starting my first job in Norway, how to live a happy life, how to stop war, why it's so hard to find a good job, our favorite classical instruments, ethical dilemmas, morality, learning Norwegian and American Sign Language, and whether or not humans can love dogs.

Then, we hone in on a letter that a listener submitted where she asks for advice on how to help the gay teen in her life. We discuss what gay teens need, whether God loves gay people, whether being gay is a sin, bible passages about homosexuality, and why we love God.

  • Blondie Guitarist Gary Lachman on Comic Books, Music, and Jung the Mystic
    May 10 2024

Call me! This week, I’m THRILLED to be speaking with Gary Lachman, who played bass guitar for the iconic rock group Blondie before embarking upon a successful legacy as a biographer of major figures in philosophy, psychology, and mysticism.

Gary and I begin by discussing his wonderful book Jung the Mystic, which I stumbled upon in a library several years ago.

Then, we talk about the turning points in Gary’s life story: comic books, rock music, and Jung!

Gary talks about how he learned to read through comic books and how the lessons he learned from those stories inspired his songwriting and later allowed him to understand and write about major thinkers and their profound ideas about life in a fun and enjoyable way!

Then, Gary and I go on a trip down memory lane when he shares about the beginnings of Blondie, living with his bandmates, writing songs like I’m Always Touched by Your Presence Dear, and what led to his departure from the group.

Then, Gary shares about his time between Blondie and finding his path as a writer, when he founded his own band called The Know and toured with Iggy Pop, followed the teachings of Aleister Crowley and was deeply impacted by Colin Wilson’s book The Occult, and eventually found his way to London.

Gary ends by sharing deep, powerful thoughts about unpacking the potential of who we truly are, following our interests, and the win-win strategy of believing that life has meaning. I’m sure that by the end of this hour, we’re all going to be inspired by Gary’s story, which will prove that if we follow our interests and take risks, we will undoubtedly create a meaningful life.

  • How to Let Your Inner Light Shine, Build Consensus, and Be a Lifelong Learner
    Apr 21 2024

This week Nancy Walker (retired professor of voice at UNC Greensboro) and I talk about proud memories during her 33 year teaching career as well as life lessons from marriage, motherhood, and her Quaker faith.

In this episode, Nancy shares three important turning points in her journey to letting her life speak authentically: taking a big leap in changing her major from English to music in undergraduate studies, meeting her husband at age 27, and putting down roots in Greensboro, North Carolina, where she had children and finding a community in the Quaker faith tradition.

I’m sure that by the end of this hour, we’re all going to be inspired by Nancy's story, which demonstrates that we can all be lifelong learners through the people we meet, places we go, and things we read and see.

  • Air Force, Marriage, and Motherhood!
    Mar 11 2024

Originally from Orange County, California, Courtney Draughon ended up seeing the world through the Air Force before meeting my nephew and having a beautiful baby boy!

In this episode, Courtney and I reminisce on our first impressions of each other as well as our recent time together in Doha, Qatar, where she currently lives.

We talk about her childhood in Orange County, California, and her high school years.

Courtney shares about how the Air Force gave her a sense of safety and tells stories about boot camp and her tour of duty in Kuwait.

Courtney also gives us the gossip on how she and Davon met, how he proposed, and their wedding ceremony!

Courtney also gets real about the difficult labor process of delivering their child, and how his presence has given her immense purpose and meaning.

I have to say this rapid fire was the most difficult of any episode because Courtney had DEEP questions for me!

And finally, my favorite part of the episode was Courtney's parting words, where she challenges us all to be less offended by opinions we don't like and how to desensitize ourselves to the noise of the world rather than obsessing.
