  • Nervous System Regulation. Am I Living in Fight or Flight?
    Aug 15 2024

Do you ever feel so nervous and on edge that you can't settle down? Like your nervous system is just out of whack? In this episode, we’re going to talk about nervous system regulation and what fight, flight, and freeze truly look like. Today’s guest, Stacy B—an author, journalist, and nervous system evangelist—is going to share her story about living with what she calls functional freeze. We’ll discuss how complex trauma affects our nervous system and explore the tools we can use to find peace.

The stress from complex trauma and undiagnosed neurodivergence, along with serving as a caregiver for over a decade, pushed staci b’s nervous system into a continuous state of high alert. Determined not to let her fate be eternal survival mode, she embarked on a journey that led her to become a Nervous System Regulation Evangelist.

With hundreds of hours of research under her belt, Staci translates complex science into easily digestible information and points the way to valuable resources that empower others to create a nervous system regulation practice that works best for them. A journalist, author, and speaker, staci highlights the value of nervous system regulation by openly sharing her own stories, both in person and in The Nervous System: Before and After, an essay series on Substack. By providing real-life examples of her own behavior in situations and relationships before she began a nervous system regulation practice and after, she illustrates the depth of the benefits available from this work. A sought-after podcast guest and speaker, she credits nervous system regulation as the foundation that frees her to live her destiny and not her fate.

  • Quality Over Quantity: How Poor Sleep Impacts Your Mental and Physical Health
    Jul 11 2024

Welcome back to a Safe Place to Land!

Today, Emily interviews Dr. Barry Krakow, a specialist in Sleep Medicine with expertise in mental health and sleep quality. Dr. Krakow discusses his research emphasizing that sleep quality outweighs sleep quantity, directly impacting both mental and physical well-being. Specifically, he explores how nasal breathing influences sleep depth and methods to enhance sleep quality. Dr. Krakow's findings reveal a link between poor sleep and various medical conditions like anxiety, depression, and more, as detailed in his book "Life-Saving Sleep: New Horizons in Mental Health Treatment." He stresses the importance of mental health professionals being trained in Sleep Medicine to ensure clients are screened for optimal sleep quality, given the significant correlation between sleep and mental health issues.

Barry Krakow, MD is a board certified sleep medicine specialist practicing in Savannah, Georgia following a 30 year career conducting research and treating mental health patients with sleep disorders. He developed and pioneered several advanced methods for the treatment of insomnia, nightmares, and sleep apnea, published these findings in top scientific journals, and proved conclusively the necessity to diligently address (without medication) sleep complaints in those suffering anxiety, depression, PTSD and more. His new book, Life Saving Sleep New Horizons in Mental Health treatment offers a mind-body approach to the art and science of sleep medicine with special emphasis on the relationships between sleep physiology and sleep-related emotion-focused therapy.

His new practice involves an innovative sleep health coaching program, accessed at www.barrykrakowmd.com, and you can follow his free Substack newsletter on sleep research updates at www.fastasleep.substack.com. Currently, as Director of Sleep Medicine Services at Gateway Behavioral Health, a full-scale application of sleep medicine interventions will be integrated didactically and clinically into the existing psychiatry residency program to become a core component of training and utilization.
