  • After Office Hours: The Girls Do It All! College Jobs, Making Friends, Working, and Never Sleeping
    Oct 1 2024

Today I'm talking to my friend - and fellow community college graduate - Irene, AKA Camps. In this discussion style episode we'll be talking about the study schedules of two ADHD night owls, why we valued our community college time so much, finding jobs in college and working through school, the AP classes scam, and how to make friends amongst it all.

Grab some snacks, start your crafts, and hang out with both of us as we slowly eat more and more cheese and drink just a little bit more wine as the night goes on

  • How To Make Friends In College
    Sep 24 2024

Are you having a hard time making friendships that actually last more than a couple weeks? Have you moved to a new city and you're starting all over, and now you're a little rusty?

Today I'm going to talk about the way Covid lockdowns have prematurely aged teenage brains, and disrupted the friendship making process.

I'll also talk about ways to combat this change, and how to make friends in college. l'll discuss different clubs and activities offered around campuses, as well as how to use the city itself to make friends. At the end of it all I'll discuss an interesting paper only recently published that details the changes to the brain cCovid lockdowns had on teens and young adults.

The paper discussed in today's episode is called, "Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Mental Health and Brain Maturation in Adolescents"

  • The Art of Rewriting Your Notes
    Sep 13 2024

Are you struggling to retain the information you hear during your lectures? Are you trying to decide if rewriting your notes is really worth it?

Today I'm going to talk about how to take notes during your lecture so you actually remember the lecture. I'll discuss the difference in recall maximization when comparing hand writing notes versus taking notes on your laptop. And, I'll talk about how to close that gap if you want to continue to take notes on your laptop. Spaced repetition will play a key role in this episode, and I'll also touch very briefly on cognitive schema.

The paper I cover today is from the journal of Contemporary Educational Psychology published in 2018, titled, ''Note-taking and science inquiry in an open-ended learning environment".

  • Learning To Love Studying
    Aug 28 2024

This episode is part two of a two part series, called Learning to Love Studying. The first episode is titled "Combat College Procrastination".

Are you someone who has never really "got" studying? You didn't do it much in high school, you don't like to do it, and now you're in college and feeling lost. More important than anything though, you want to know how to study without it sucking quite so much. If you think that's impossible I've got some strategies here that can change your mind, and it starts with reconsidering how we think of "studying"!

Today I'm going to talk about how to learn to enjoy studying, even just a little bit. After I talk about the strategy for setting yourself up to have feelgood study sessions, I'll talk about some of the research I used to come up with these strategies.

At the end of my talk I'll go over some of the research papers I pulled my information from, and I'll further discuss how to implement ideas from both episodes in the series to have a complete strategy on avoiding distractions and increasing your study motivation!

You can also find a free companion worksheet to this series on my Kofi page, or on my website: wolfpackacademics.com

    Aug 20 2024

This is the first part of a two part series, called Learning to Love Studying

Do you struggle finding the motivation to study, staying on task, and avoiding distracting notifications? Do you find yourself procrastinating despite the anxiety inherent to procrastinating? If you do you're not alone, and I've got a few tricks to help you break the procrastination cycle.

My name is Skylar Wolphe, and I'm an academic counselor (and former law professor) here to share weekly tips, tricks, and shortcuts on maximizing retention and building study plans - all to help you get through college without burning out.
