  • The Magic of Journaling – Kent Osborne #313

Here is a great quote from his website

"You see … before I became a golfer I was a pioneer in the executive coaching field, My experience working with professional athletes and corporate leaders revealed this truth: Feelings precede thoughts. Or, to put it differently, you can’t think positive when you feel negative."

Kent is a good golfer in his own right and he charts his own personal experiences of the game with a big following of players.

The first time we spoke it was clear that Kent and I shared many similar trains of thought.

In particular the importance of JOURNALING

We had a truly memorable conversation discussing the numerous benefits of being a regular journal taker.

It is something we have spoken about on this show and promoted heavily in the Mind Caddie app

    We discussed

    • The difference between THINKING about gratitude and actually FEELING it
    • The ability to be playful when you are hitting your shots
    • Why journaling can help us to balance out the overload of information that is coming at us in the modern world
    • Why evolution got us to focus on the negative and our mistakes
    • How our thinking patterns become so habitual and how journaling can help shift this
    • Why BALANCE is so important from an evolutionary perspective
    • Why journaling can help us to still get something out of a bad outcome day on the course
    • The ability to develop spontaneous acceptance and to be able to be NEUTRAL to the variety of outcomes.
    • The importance of acknowledging the GOOD shots and the good experiences
    • If this was your LAST round of golf how would you want to experience it?

So much of what Kent says is based in real world experience and makes for that most elusive of qualities common sense. When you listen to him you realise just how precious this NEXT opportunity is to play the game.

Take the plunge and embark on a year of journaling and just see what it can do for your game.

The Skill of ACCEPTANCE and why it is SO important to develop – Karl Morris

Why you will always fall short of your true capability without this skill

Thanks for joining me on today’s Brain Booster which is a solo run from me. I wanted to take the opportunity to bring together some of the key concepts from the previous months and some of the recent guests.

At the heart of so much of what we have been discussing is the SKILL of acceptance.

If we are not willing to be ok with the variability of potential outcomes the game can throw at us then we will always be at less than our best.

Acceptance is NOT resignation. We are not trying to pretend to be happy after a bad shot or a missed putt but we ARE willing to deal with the reality and move on

So many people are sold the idea that this swing fix or this ‘secret’ will PROTECT them from a poor outcome yet in reality NOTHING will ever protect us from the need to develop a robust relationship to undesired outcomes

    • Acceptance is an ongoing set of skills that requires a diligent and consistent approach
    • Today I will share with you the building blocks of acceptance
    • Skills that have helped many players at all levels to ACCESS their current skills
    • Why the skill acceptance begins well before the round starts
    • Why ‘contamination’ of your shots is such an issue
    • The value of journaling
    • Why making a commitment to develop acceptance is so important
    • What acceptance does to your physiology
    • Why the expression of your technical skill is dependent on your acceptance skills
    • An opportunity for you to really bring together and clarify some of the key Brain Booster concepts of the previous few months
    • HOW you can actually take action and release more of your capabilities ....Enjoy!

  • How to find success without losing yourself – Simon Mundie #309
    May 17 2024
On today’s show we have former BBC sports presenter Simon Mundie who has recently released a tremendous book called ‘How to find success without losing yourself’ Download Mind Caddie for hundreds of short audio lessons and exercises produced by Karl and start improving your mental game the same way as six major champions: Download Mind Caddie Here Simon has spent many years interviewing and being around some of the greatest names in sport. People who have achieved what others may think as being the ‘ultimate’ experience Yet often he detected there was an underlying dissatisfaction Champion Thinking is a counter to the ‘success evangelism’ that is so prevalent. Typically, we think we’ll be happy when X happens (the job, house, relationship, World Cup win, Olympic gold medal). However, frequently people reach the top of their success Everest and feel underwhelmed or even empty. But the experience of flow is inherently enjoyable. Why is that? Because as thoughts about past and future drop away, so does our identity and sense of self. And we love it when that happens! The trophy is just a symbol of that moment. That’s why we love losing ourselves – in sport, music, conversation, books, dance – the portals are vast. While we think we want to become a ‘somebody’, we are happiest when we experience being ‘nobody’. On that level, we are always at peace, whole and fulfilled. The trick then is to embody this recognition, even when we are not 'in flow', and this book can show you how. This is a great conversation exploring some of the deeper topics around our experience. What is ‘non duality’?How can we incorporate this in our everyday life? What is the difference between our ‘thinking mind’ and our ‘observing mind’?How to create some separation from our thoughts so we don’t get so caught up in the content of our thinkingWhat are the best way to set goals? What does make us truly happy?A really thought provoking session from someone who has been able to see through the illusion of ‘I will be happy when” To find out more about Simon and his book and podcast: https://www.simonmundie.com/book BUILDING STABLE CONFIDENCE – THE NEW PROGRAM To get your copy of the brand new program with Raymond Prior and Karl Morris It will truly make a BIG difference to your development Link to buy: Building Stable Confidence C Champion Thinking is a counter to the ‘success evangelism’ that is so prevalent. Jim has had a BIG input on players who listen to the show and I wanted to get him back to talk at more length about a subject that is unfortunately very relevant to a LOT of golfers the YIPS.

We had another wonderful conversation about how to dig yourself out of the doldrums if you are being affected by the yips in certain parts of the game.

    • We discussed why the yips are becoming more and more prominent these days.
    • Why an overload of technical input can be so damaging to your game
    • How poor chipping concepts are often the cause of the yips to start
    • Why we tend to fall into the trap of extremes
    • Being able to find the ‘middle way’
    • How your unconscious mind is trying to PROTECT you from outcomes
    • Separating your sense of self from golfing outcomes
    • How golf can be a vehicle for psychological transformation
