  • S2E2 Bad Habits of Ineffective Teachers
    Apr 8 2022

    Season 2 Episode 2.
    Today’s topic:
    BAD HABITS OF INEFFECTIVE TEACHERS

Thank you for tuning into the Center Pod Podcast Show

We think you will enjoy it, so let's dig in

    Content:

    Bad habits:

    1. Focusing on being liked. Everyone wants to be liked, but if we keep thinking about how we want our students to like us, this is absolutely going to affect our teaching. And not in a good way.
    2. Failure to plan: We all have days that we realize last minute that we forgot to make copies of that worksheet we really need, but if we find ourselves habitually starting class not sure what we’re doing today, we are in trouble. Yes, we might make it through the class, but we’re certainly not going to be as effective as we could be if we’d prepared adequately.
    3. Not setting a standard or expectations:
      • Procedures: Have a well-managed classroom with very well defined classroom rules and procedures that are clearly communicated to students.
      • Targets: Show and communicate the learning targets of the day and how they connect to an essential higher order learning goal.
    4. Being inconsistent
    5. Thinking you've figured it all out: Whenever we start to think that we’ve got it down, that we don’t need to keep learning and growing, we start stagnating. And we’re less effective than we could be if we kept looking for new ideas and better ways to teach.
    6. Teaching without passion:
    7. Having a Lack of Empathy: People are fighting silent battles everyday
    8. Being Boring… Doing things the same old way
    9. Suffering In Silence…  Not asking for help from your colleagues

    Summary:
Because of the significant impact teachers have on their students’ academic achievement, life and career, they are always longing for effective teaching practices. But, despite their intent to improve and grow, there are some bad teaching habits they make that can negatively affect their teaching.

Pandemic & Anxiety in the Classroom
WE ARE BACK. Center Pod Podcast
You can check out the video version of this episode on our Youtube page. Stay tuned for more insight and educator clarity.

In this episode we scratch the surfaces of anxiety disorder that is a leading cause for both students and teachers dealing with some form of depression. We linked an article below to assist our listeners on how to recognize this form of disorder.

According to the National Institutes of Health, nearly 1 in 3 of all adolescents ages 13 to 18 will experience an anxiety disorder. These numbers have been rising steadily; between 2007 and 2012, anxiety disorders in children and teens went up to 20%

These stats combined with the rate of hospital admissions for suicidal teenagers also doubling over the past decade leaves us with many concerning questions.

Lastly, the pandemic did not make any of these issues better.

    Final Thoughts:

These past 12 months have been unbelievably insane.  We are a little over 12 months into the Coronavirus.  So much has happened, so much unknown, so much has changed.  So much of what has changed and of that unknown has been in education.  So my fellow educators, I offer you a word of inspiration “Every day may not be good… but there is good in every day”
