Valentyna always planned to undertake a medical career. However, after learning that physiotherapists work more closely with patients during their rehabilitation, she commenced studies in physiotherapy at the South Australian Institute of Technology, graduating with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Physiotherapy in 1981. After working in public hospitals and private clinics for 10 years in Adelaide and London, Valentyna undertook a Master of Applied Science in Physiotherapy (Orthopaedics) at the University of South Australia in 1990-91. During this time she was strongly influenced by the teachings of David S. Butler (adverse mechanical tension in the nervous system) and Mark Jones (clinical reasoning). It was this knowledge, along with observations of her own body in order to manage her low back and neck pain, that ultimately contributed to her theory of the Right Functional Scoliosis (RFS). After developing a management protocol that was both simple to follow and use and which achieved great success when applied to her patients, Valentyna recorded her self-management approach for management of low back and neck pain in her new book 'Left of Centre : Turn Your Life Right Around'. Since releasing her book in late 2021, Valentyna has continued to refine her management approach, work part-time in a private clinic in Adelaide and to practise what she preaches. In addition to her long physiotherapy career, Valentyna also performed for over 20 years in the State Opera of South Australia chorus and taught singing to both adults and children. Further knowledge gained by attending courses in Voicecraft and Estill Technique voice production enabled Valentyna to develop a unique approach to treating vocal issues, by combining her previous performing/teaching experience with vocal physiotherapy techniques and the RFS management approach. In her spare time, Valentyna enjoys bushwalking in the Adelaide hills, reading, live music performances and attending international film festivals. She is also planning more overseas travel, particularly to Europe, in the next few years.
