I left school with little academic qualifications and with no real direction of what I wanted to do for a career. I trained to become an electrician, but quickly realised that it wasn’t challenging enough for me and felt that something was missing. I decided that I wanted a more dynamic and exciting vocation so, I signed up to join the fire service. Since joining I have risen up the ranks from firefighter to middle manager and I am currently a Station Commander. On a day-to-day basis I am responsible for managing staff, budgets, projects and responding to larger incidents in a position of command. I achieved this with no underpinning qualifications from either college or university. My career pathway has been met with many frustrations, emotions and testing situations. I have faced complete elation and extreme lows which have all had an impact on my personal wellbeing. During the global pandemic of 2019, where many people, my staff included, were suffering from mental health. I challenged myself to write a book and share my personal mental health issues and take the reader on an often unknown and mysterious journey into the work of the emergency services. I want to offer an insight of how the different types of emergencies have had an impact on me, and what I have discovered to be able to help my wellbeing and mental health recovery. This book will help readers understand why individually, we are affected by traumatic events and what we can do to help reduce this impact on our bodies and minds. My aim is to share my experiences in hope, that the reader can relate and return to a calmer and more balanced life.
