Montague Rhodes James (Goodnestone, 1 de agosto de 1862 - Eton, 12 de junio de 1936), anticuario, medievalista y escritor británico de cuentos de terror. Su infancia transcurrió entre altas y tupidas bibliotecas repletas de libros antiguos, en su mayoría textos religiosos, en el condado de Kent, Los padres de M.R. James, optaron por brindarle una educación acorde con sus preferencias y lo enviaron al prestigioso Eton College. Continuó sus estudios en la ciudad de Cambridge, en el King's College, otro colegio al cual sólo unos pocos tenían acceso.

M. R. James es sin duda uno de los más significados miembros de esa característica saga de eruditos ingleses que compaginaron y compaginan su obra científica y académica con la literatura popular. Su obra no desmerece a la de Poe o Lovecraft.
