Mary Sethia is the author of Postpartum 101: Your Uncensored Guide to the Fourth Trimester. Her writing is aimed at new mothers, taking a holistic approach to postpartum mental and physical health and giving women the guidance they need to prioritize pregnancy and postpartum wellness. An optometrist by trade, Mary became passionate about supporting postpartum women after she had a baby and discovered that there was so much more to know than she was prepared for. She has six sisters, all of whom have children, and she saw with each one the overwhelming sense of isolation that can happen to new mothers after giving birth—something she has also experienced herself. She sees the pressure put on new moms to be perfect, and she’s determined to provide a realistic narrative that doesn’t sugarcoat the experience. Having been much more accurately informed about pregnancy, Mary took care of her body extremely well in the months leading up to delivery, and as a result, had an uneventful labor, which sparked a parallel interest in pregnancy wellness. Her goal now is to create resources that have openness and transparency at their core so that new moms know what pregnancy, postpartum, and motherhood are really like. She wants new moms to know that motherhood is beautiful, but it’s also very hard, and not every moment is the fairytale they’ve been led to believe it is. Through doing this, Mary hopes to help new mothers find more joy in those early days, which, when you’re unprepared, can be incredibly overwhelming. Mary is a mom to one spunky little 1 year old and an aunt to 18 nieces and nephews. She still works as an optometrist, and is passionate about building a supportive community for new mothers.
