Alex Green’s best high school friend died of drug overdose. Shocked by this, Alex promised that he would dedicate his life to studying psychoactive substances and developing strategies for their safe use. That led him to study botany. He wrote a Ph. D. thesis on the biochemistry of the salvia plant and went on to become a full-time researcher. His current academic field of interest is ethnobotany. As an ethnobotanist, he travels to remote corners of the world and gathers judgment-free information on how local people use local plants. This is how Alex Green gets his firsthand knowledge of herbal medicine and the safe use of psychoactive plants. As a scientist, he doesn’t really care if governments approve or disapprove of particular plants – all that matters to him is whether they’re safe and effective. This is why he often studies plant products classified as “recreational drugs”. His best work so far is his comprehensive guide on the safe use of Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa), an ancient healing plant that has a variety of psychoactive uses. Alex Green is married and has two children. His wife is a nature photographer who loves taking pictures of exotic plants, so the family often travels together. The Greens have traveled all over Southeast Asia and Mexico, and now they’re planning a trip to Tibet.
