On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik I, and the space race was born. In 1528, a mission set out from Spain to colonize Florida. Douglas Mawson, born in 1882 and knighted in 1914, was Australia’s greatest Antarctic explorer. On 2 December 1911, he led an expedition from Hobart to explore the virgin frozen coastline below, 2000 miles of which had never felt the tread of a human foot. After tragedy struck, Mawson found himself all alone, 160 miles from safety, with next to no food.

Colonel Percy Harrison Fawcett was among the last of a legendary breed of British explorers. In February 1959, a group of nine experienced hikers in the Russian Ural Mountains died mysteriously on an elevation known as Dead Mountain. Eerie aspects of the incident—unexplained violent injuries, signs that they cut open and fled the tent without proper clothing or shoes, a strange final photograph taken by one of the hikers, and elevated levels of radiation found on some of their clothes—have led to decades of speculation over what really happened.
