The Last Marines

After more than 20 years in special operations, USMC Gunnery Sergeant Wolf Mathison wasn’t looking forward to retirement when—implanted with an experimental artificial intelligence—he deployed on his last mission with a platoon of Marine Raiders being sent to the Jovian moon Europa. The USS Jefferson was destroyed en route, though, and only Mathison and three other marines survived. Trapped in stasis, they were hurled into the outer reaches of the solar system, where they wouldn’t be found for hundreds of years.

Having escaped execution by the SOG, Gunnery Sergeant Mathison and his marines are hunted by an elite Governance task force and the entity that escaped from SOG Special Research Base 402-Alpha. If they don’t warn the Republic in time, humanity is doomed. But the marines need more information about the entity hunting them, information the SOG doesn’t want them to have, and it’s a race against time as their hunters close in.

Betrayed by the Republic, Mathison and his Marines are separated. Hunted by the Republic, the SOG, and the vanhat, they have nowhere to turn but to each other.

Mathison and his Marines have been reunited, and they’ve found unlikely allies in their mission to save humanity, which is currently tearing itself apart. SOG systems are rebelling, the Republic wants to run away…and then there’s the whole invasion of the vanhat they have to contend with.

The odds are against Mathison and his Marines. The Republic has abandoned them, and the Governance has collapsed. The vanhat are sweeping through human space almost unopposed, crushing the few humans still scattered throughout the ruins of the Governance.

The vanhat are within the walls, and mankind’s days are numbered. Mathison has a desperate plan. A suicide mission. Infiltrate fortress Sol to shut off the defenses long enough for a d-bomb strike to kill the vanhat invaders.

Prime Minister Mathison must consolidate power and bind the Governance to his will if he is to save the human race. And for that to happen, Stathis will have to become the spearhead of his efforts, because the vanhat will not give up, and they are not the only threat. Becket must also be dealt with, or he may destroy the Governance from within. But is Stathis ready to be the spearhead? He’d better be, for there is no one else Mathison can turn to, and the need is greater than they know.

The Governance is falling apart as Mathison struggles to keep the Sol system from imploding. Stathis is learning more about the threat that Becket and the AI collective is becoming, and Sif has discovered that there are lethal flaws in the Alliance’s defenses. Mathison must declare himself Emperor and reveal himself before it is too late, but he needs the support of the Vapaus Republic, and—as the vanhat assault intensifies against Sol—there are factions within the governance that see Mathison’s weakness as an opportunity.

Emperor Wolf Mathison has given Feng permission to build a SCBI-equipped legion. Composed of ODT, Guard, and Fleet loyalists, they will follow the Emperor and Stathis in the fight against the vanhat… but is it too little, too late? The vanhat are about to deploy their elite cohorts—millions of fierce warriors that have been sleeping in tombs, waiting for the call to battle. And they aren’t worried about SCBI-equipped troops, because they have sentient implants of their own.

The battle lines are collapsing, and the Legion of Wolves cannot hold back the tide. Luna and Earth are both falling to the enemy, and there is little hope as the defense is pushed back on all sides. But when Wolf learns about a race in a distant part of the galaxy that has successfully fought the vanhat to a standstill, he decides to launch an expedition to seek their help. The AI Collective has also learned about the expedition, though, and intends to kill humanity before they can find aid.
