A world brought up on stories of alien invasions and wars with other planets is asked to open its arms to 300 aliens who are stranded in their crippled mining ship. The eyes of the entire world are focused on the village of Thatcham: the site of the first confirmed contact with an alien species.

The devil, who lived on the hill across the bay, owned all the rich lands which produced fine crops. One day, St. Michael offered the devil a deal: He would work the land, and they would both share the crops equally. The devil agreed, and Satan declared that he would get everything that grew above the ground, while St. Michael would get the crops that grew underground. So the lands produced nothing but carrots, turnips, onions, and parsnips. Satan was furious, but St. Michael offered to give him everything that grew underground the next year. The following year, all of Satan’s lands were covered with wheat, oats, peas, and cabbage that thrives above ground.

They awoke in deep space on a ship they had never known...in a time which seemed distant. They were exploring. The vast, the infinite, the mysterious. The cosmos. But they each shared a mental gap. A psychological disconnect. How had they gotten there? What were their origins? They are assigned the same mission and explore together.

It's far into the future. The Earth's rotation has stopped and the sun is dying. The oceans have shifted towards the poles, flooding all of the cities to the North. The cities in the South have been punished with a blistering, relentless sun in a vast, dry, deserted landscape. The survivors have learned to adapt to months of deadly heat, living in darkness beneath the Earth. A scout comes unexpectedly to the colony - near death, he spends his first days in a coma, as rumors surface of a "habitable zone". As supplies near depletion, the colonists argue - who will journey to the zone? And what message is the scout trying to deliver?
