Sister, Momma, Ivylee, and Bunk live on a chicken farm in the rural south. Sister maintains both the farm and the family. Each looks for love and each waits: Momma waits for her husband Bunk to return and claim his severed leg or for God to fetch her home; Ivylee waits for her imaginary lover, Mr. Robinson, and Sister waits for relief—relief from running the farm and maintaining the family. Each day they hold a memorial service for Bunk’s leg, which they otherwise keep in the freezer.
