Stunned by the loss of her paralegal job and with nowhere to live, city girl Amber Preston agrees to take a temporary job as a house-and-pet-sitter on a mini farm. Problem is, she’s never had a pet of any kind, and now, she must care for a collection of large and small animals. Jorden “Jordie” Butler grew up on a farm, several miles from the small town of Tuke’s Valley in Washington State. When she gets a job at a chain bookstore in the nearby city of Vancouver, she and a co-worker dream of having their own bookstore. Fortunately, one of the benefits of her job is partial reimbursement of tuition at the local community college. Jordie decides to work toward a business degree. Unfortunately, Jordie loses her job when the bookstore eventually closes, and she has difficulty finding another one that will allow her to work part-time and go to school.

Barbara "Barb" Sessions is a wrangler and sometimes babysitter at the local dude ranch, Saddle Up. She meets lots of "weekend dudes" - older men, couples in love, and families with children, but never any men her age, except for losers. Could it be because she's always in jeans and cowboy boots? She can't even remember the last time she wore a dress and heels. On top of that, one of the wranglers fancies himself in love with her. Will she ever meet Mr. Right?
