A short story of approximately 3,600 words, set in a Welsh village in the 1950s. Jenny, a naive 10-year-old school girl who is "smitten" with a young lad, tells her story. This is a short story suitable for kids from about seven or eight years old to about 10 or 11 years old.

A neighbour is taken ill in the middle of the night; the folk who live on Bevans Road turn out to find out what will happen to Charlie. Jenny, unable to sleep, joins her mother outside and listens to the conversations taking place around them.
