Adressaten var Otto, en judisk pojke som tretton år gammal ensam kommit till Sverige från ett Österrike som alltmer präglades av nazisternas maktövertagande 1938. Ottos föräldrar blev kvar i Wien och bevittnade den tilltagande terrorn mot den judiska befolkningen. Breven till Otto visar hur deras vardagsliv hela tiden kringskärs.
