Fourteen-year-old Dita is one of the many imprisoned by the Nazis at Auschwitz. Taken, along with her mother and father, from the Terezín ghetto in Prague, Dita is adjusting to the constant terror that is life in the camp. When Jewish leader Freddy Hirsch asks Dita to take charge of the eight precious volumes the prisoners have managed to sneak past the guards, she agrees. And so, Dita becomes the librarian of Auschwitz.

Au début des années vingt, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry et Jean Mermoz, pilotes émérites, voient en l'Aéropostale leur planche de salut pour échapper à un quotidien terne. C'est ainsi que leurs chemins se croisent et rejoignent celui d'Henri Guillaumet, à un tournant de leur existence qui inaugurera une ère nouvelle : celle de leur légende. Ensemble, ils vont ouvrir les premières lignes d'acheminement du courrier sur des routes aériennes inexplorées, affrontant les déserts hostiles ou les sommets enneigés de la cordillère des Andes, et défiant l'Atlantique.

À quatorze ans, Dita est une des nombreuses victimes du régime nazi. Avec ses parents, elle est arrachée au ghetto de Terezín, à Prague, pour être enfermée dans le camp d'Auschwitz. Là, elle tente malgré l'horreur de trouver un semblant de normalité.

Im alles verschlingenden Morast des Konzentrationslagers Auschwitz-Birkenau hat der Blockälteste Fredy Hirsch heimlich eine Schule aufgebaut. Ihr wertvollster Besitz sind acht alte, zerfallene Bücher. Fredy ernennt die 14-jährige Dita zur Bibliothekarin, sie soll die verbotenen Bände künftig verstecken und schützen. Dita, die schon früher Trost in Büchern gefunden hat, kümmert sich mit äußerster Hingabe um "ihre" kleine Bibliothek.
