يسيطر الشعور بالغربة على الشخصية الرئيسية في هذه الرواية، وهي المحرك الأكبر له، شعوره بالغربة بدأ منذ طفولته واستمر طوال حياته، يحاول أن يمحوه بكل الأشكال، الشرب والمخدرات والجنس لكن لا ينفعه شيء عندما يفكر فقط في الموت، ويصل إلى مرحلة يعتبر نفسه فيها لم يعد إنساناً بشرياً، وتأتي الرواية في ثلاث فصول وتحكي قصته من طفولته وحتى أواخر العشرينات من عمره.
