لقد تولى الشيخ حسن العطار مشيخة الأزهر عام 1830 وظل شيخاً للأزهر حتى وفاته، ولقد كان الشيخ حسن العطار أول صوتٍ طالَب بإصلاح الأزهر بل دعا إلى إصلاح التعليم بالبلاد كلها، فالمدارس العالية الفنية التى أنشئت بمصر فى ذلك العهد، كالهندسة والطب والصيدلة هى استجابة لدعوة العطار وتطلعاته ومناداته بحتمية تغيير الأحوال فى البلاد.
