Refuges, engineered by humans for the benefit of birds, attract birds that would otherwise be harmed by cities, agriculture, and industry. There is a National Wildlife Refuge within a one-hour drive of most major U.S. cities.

In 1867 the Dominion of Canada was formed. In 1931 Canada became an independent nation within the Commonwealth. We are exploring Ottawa, Canada's Capital, in the Province of Ontario. Our exploration begins on Parliament Hill and ends across the Ottawa River at the Civilization Museum.

In Scotland's Clyde River Valley, not far from Glasgow, the industrial town of New Lanark was established in 1785. New Lanark was one of the largest cotton manufacturing centers in Great Britain, and a model for how employees, both adults and their children were treated by the companies they worked for. Today, New Lanark is a model of cultural heritage, preservation and restoration thanks to the New Lanark Conservation Trust. We are exploring the Village with Richard Evans, development officer for the trust.

Underground Railroad Circle of Hope. Our exploration of the Undergound Railroad continues in Auburn, and includes Harriet Tubman's Home, now a museum. In Auburn New York’s capital, Harriet Tubman lived her older less dangerous years. During the dangerous years, Harriet Tubman was a major part of the Underground Railroad; she helped at last one thousand enslaved people escape to freedom.

In the Southern Highlands of El Salvador, 2,600 years ago, a clay terrace was built on the side of a mountain. Today, the fan shaped terrace is covered with a thick layer of earth and artifacts belonging to the people who built and used this important ceremonial site. The site is also covered with hundreds of coffee trees, belonging to the Santa Leticia Gourmet Coffee Farm.

The spring forms a pool before gliding from the rocks to become the mighty Mississippi River, most people believe. Itasca is a derivative of two Greek words that mean "true" and "source".

Rochester New York was a major stop over on the Underground Railroad, a system of people and safe-haven houses that assisted enslaved African Americans escaping to freedom. We tour the Circle of Hope with Aquaba Tours.

The Rainbow Forest Museum is at the southern entrance to the park. Everywhere we walk, lying on the ground are sections of ancient trees that turned to brightly colored stone beginning 225 million years ago.

Off the beaten path, these two sites are extremely important to Native Americans of the area.

Gliding, a winery and an inn: Audio Journeys explore St. Remy France. In southern France's Provence, the old ways of doing things are not forgotten in the modern society. Patricia Lawrence soars with the eagles in a glider to discover the old villages and farms that dot the valleys. Back on the ground, we stop at an organic winery built in a cave in the mountains we were just soaring above. We explore an historic inn, built over Roman ruins, that is being preserved by the innkeepers.
