Tous les parents seraient fiers d'avoir une petite fille comme Matilda : mignonne, gentille et surtout dotée de facultés intellectuelles ahurissantes. Imaginez qu'à cinq ans elle a déjà lu tout Dickens, tout Hemingway et attaque Steinbeck ! Hélas pour Matilda, non seulement elle a pour géniteurs les pires crétins méchants que la terre ait portés, mais en plus Mlle Legourdin, la directrice de son école, est un monstre sadique qui hait les enfants.

Matilda elsker at sidde med hovedet begravet i en bog og bruge sit kløgtige hoved. Hendes forældre mener derimod, at det er spild af tid, og at hun hellere burde se noget mere fjernsyn – og stoppe med at sige så mange dumme ting. Da hun endelig må komme i skole, tror hun, at alt vil ændre sig. Lige indtil hun møder den onde rektor Frøken Trunchbull, som på tyrannisk vis styrer skolen. Efter flere års undertrykkelse fra både forældre og rektor, tager Matilda kampen op - men ikke helt på den måde, hun havde forestillet sig.

Matilda különleges lány, de a szülei sajnos komplett idióták. Az apja szélhámos, az anyja meg sötét, mint egy belső zseb. Ki nem állhatják a lányukat, azt szeretnék, ha többet tévézne, és kevesebbet olvasna. Czukor kisasszony, a tündéri tanárnő viszont hamar rájön, hogy Matilda zseni. Az iskola rettegett igazgatónője azonban mindkettőjük életét megkeseríti.Még szerencse, hogy Matilda elképesztő trükköket tartogat a tarsolyában, és nem fél megmutatni a szörnyű felnőtteknek, hogy vele jobb nem ujjat húzni!

Matilda ist ein sehr besonderes kleines Mädchen. Sie ist blitzgescheit und liest unendlich viele Bücher, sie ist mutig und abenteuerlustig und sie hat ein großes Herz. Jeder Pappkopf könnte das erkennen – doch die Erwachsenen sind leider völlig ahnungslos. Allen voran die gefürchtete Rektorin von Matildas Schule. Sie heißt Knüppelkuh und benimmt sich auch so. Einzig Matildas Klassenlehrerin, Jennifer Honig, erkennt, was in Matilda steckt. Leider hat es die Knüppelkuh auf Jenny Honig ganz besonders abgesehen.
