Episode 131 – 15-minute Speed Coaching with Charlotte Lewis – Hormones…A Case Discussion

Welcome to another 15-minute Speed Coaching Session for Veterinary and Pet Care Professionals!

The rules of the game are as follows:

    · Episodes will be in-the-moment, off-the-cuff and unscripted.

    · Coaching sessions will be 15 Minutes MAXIMUM, so wherever we finish, we finish…

    · Which means that we might not find complete resolution to your question, but we will certainly get the thought process started!

In this episode, I chat to Canine Dog Trainer and Behaviourist, Charlotte Lewis, about her own dog who poses a number of behavioural and physical health challenges in her adolescence.

Have a listen as we chat through how Giardia duodenalis infection as a puppy, hormonal fluctuations during her first heat cycle and her own individual behavioural make-up contribute to some of the behavioural challenges she is experiencing.

I absolutely loved chatting to Charlotte, who is not only a fantastic dog trainer, but also a wonderful caregiver to this lovely, sensitive girl.

    Episode 129 – Sertraline

Sertraline is a really useful SSRI that is quite commonly prescribed by Veterinary Behaviour Specialists or veterinarians with a strong interest in Behaviour Medicine but is possibly sometimes overlooked by general practitioners.

So, I thought we'd do a bit of a deep dive into sertraline and the things you, as professionals, need to know about this medication.

    Here's what you'll learn:

    · Indications for and uses of sertraline in Veterinary Medicine (and some super easy ways to remember them).

    · Why sertraline might be a good choice for Canine or Feline Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome.

    · When sertraline might be a better choice than fluoxetine (if legally possible – the dreaded cascade !!).

    · Potential drug interactions and contraindications.

This is a bit of a whistlestop tour into sertraline but if you'd like to dive even deeper, I've got you covered – My PSYCHOACTIVE course contains everything you need to know:

    https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/psychoactive

And, if you'd like to learn how sertraline and other Veterinary Psychopharmaceuticals can be applied practically, then The Behaviour Case Collective, where we take a deep-dive into one real-life Behaviour Case every month, might be just the thing for you!

Episode 128 – Safety & Predictability, Control, Choice & Agency

The last 4 weeks of our lives here in Abu Dhabi have been interesting to say the least. Being under constant threat from Iranian missiles and hearing the loud "booms" of the interceptors taking care of them has been like nothing I have experienced before.

Living in this state of unrest really got me thinking about what we take for granted – the feeling of safety and predictability in our everyday lives and being able to live with a sense of control, choice and agency.

I also know that this is not the case for many of my patients.

Living in a constant state of fear or anxiety with little predictability of the environment and/or social relationships can be hugely debilitating and will affect quality of life, wellbeing and welfare.

There are some really easy ways to introduce more of these important welfare factors into your pets' and patients' lives and I chat you through some of my favourite ways of doing so.

All it takes is to make some small changes to implement these foundational needs!

Episode 126 – The Trinity Treatment Plan Template

I created this Treatment Plan Template to help keep me focused and organized during consultations and to ensure that I didn't miss a thing when writing my comprehensive report for my caregivers.

Based on the "7 M" approach to creating Veterinary Behaviour Treatment Plans, this template covers all the bases, ensures you don't overwhelm caregivers with too much information while still providing a comprehensive treatment strategy.

I love resources like this one and I wish I had had it sooner, for example during my residency when I was often seeing 3 initial consultations per day and was sometimes overwhelmed with all the information to remember and digest!

You can find the Trinity Treatment Plan Template in a number of different places:

    1. As part of the "Designing a beautiful Veterinary Behaviour Treatment Plan" Masterclass right here:

    https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/treatment-plans

    2. As part of the "Professional Guides" E-Book right here:

    https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/trinity-ebook

    3. As part of The Behaviour Case Collective Membership right here:

    https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/behaviour-case-collective

I really hope you find this resource as useful as I do!

  • 125 Behaviour and Thyroid Disease
    Mar 10 2026

Episode 125 – Behaviour and Thyroid Disease

This is a big topic, and I really enjoyed diving into it.

I think we can all agree that the outdated notion that low thyroid hormone levels in dogs directly causes aggression is exactly that – outdated.

However, changes or dysregulation in thyroid hormone levels in both dogs and cats can still affect behaviour and this is what I chat about in this episode.

Here are some of the things I mention in the episode:

    · The differences in canine and feline thyroid disease

    · Causes of hypothyroidism in dogs

    · Incidence of hypothyroidism in the canine population

    · Hormone cascade regulation

    · Clinical signs of hypothyroidism and how these can affect behaviour

I also talk about the complexities of diagnosis of thyroid disease and how this can be influenced by certain medications.

Here are the studies I reference in the episode:

Gulikers, K.P. and Panciera, D.L., 2003. Evaluation of the effects of clomipramine on canine thyroid function tests. Journal of veterinary internal medicine, 17(1), pp.44-49.

I really hope you enjoy this episode!
