• 27. She Didn’t Want to Sit With Me on the Bus! (She was 5)
    Jun 13 2023

My daughter didn’t want to sit with me on the bus!

    She was 5.

What kind of 5-year-old doesn’t want to sit with her mom?!?!

I thought I had a few more years before this type of thing started to happen. But nope, she was too cool for her mom on the kindergarten field trip.

That was 4 years ago and I was devastated.

I had the opportunity to go on another field trip with her recently (the first in 4 years), and I share what went down as she (once again) didn't want to sit with me on the bus :(

  • 26. Are we (unwittingly) preventing children from learning?
    May 30 2023

“If you’re tempted to touch the microscopes, then put your hands in your pockets.” I heard the group leader tell the children.

I was a parent chaperone on my daughter’s grade 3 field trip and was having a hard time with what I was seeing.

    Admittedly, I was triggered.

I felt suffocated as the adults were trying to control the children. Yet, this is what my child experiences every day.

Here are my thoughts on what transpired and what it means for our kids' learning.

  • 25. Will They Be OK? Moving Through Our Own Fear As Parents
    Sep 5 2022

Today we’re talking about fear as our kids are back in school.

Now, fear can have quite a broad meaning… it includes worry, anxiety, stress, and even guilt. I’m using the word "fear" to cover all of these feelings.

Your fear is telling you something.

It wants your attention. It needs to be heard.

So let's dive into exactly how to do that so we can be a little more relaxed around the scary things.

  • 24. Expect More Meltdowns and Power Struggles During This Back to School Season
    Aug 29 2022

Happy back-to-school season. 'Tis the season of new routines and high emotions.

It’s the season where your super flexible kids become little monsters that dig their heels in over the stupidest things. Hahaha….alright, they’re not little monsters, but it sure can feel like it some days.

It’s the season of stubbornness, unrealistic demands, lengthy meltdowns, name-calling, and fighting more with their brother or sister, to name a few things you might see from your little one during the first few weeks of school.

This is NORMAL. Maddening as hell, but normal.

This is your child going through a period of change and not quite knowing how to process and deal with their emotions.

And we dive into the specifics in this episode. Enjoy :)

  • 23.Pushing Your Child vs. Waiting Until They’re Ready (challenges of the shy kid)
    Aug 22 2022

If you have a little one who is shy or super timid in new situations, then this will be a great episode for you.

We want to support our child's emotions, respect their need to take things slower, and trust that they’ll eventually get there at their own pace. We want them to know that we’ve always got their back and will be there for them when they struggle.

However, there are times when your child will have to push past their fear and walk into an uncomfortable situation. And they need to know they are capable of dealing with discomfort.

This is the gray area of parenting. This is where our goals or values may conflict with one another. So how do we navigate?

  • 22. Getting into the Back-to-School Routine
    Aug 15 2022

Who's ready and eager to get back into a routine as the school year starts up?

Hahaha.... I'm going to guess you're about 50/50 on that.

We KNOW there are pros and cons. We know there are good things about routines that make our lives easier.

And.... we also kind of resist routines because it restricts our freedom and can sometimes feel confining. Plus our kids might really resist at the beginning and that's no fun to deal with!

In today’s episode, we are going to talk about all things routines… why routines are important, and how to set up a great routine your kids will actually do without complaint.

  • 21. Being Inconsistent is Part of the Process (But it Sends Mixed Messages)
    Jun 27 2022
