Rob Biernacki is my professor, a BJJ black belt under Caio Terra, the creator of BJJConcepts.net, and the head instructor at Island Top Team in Nanaimo. He is known around the world for his conceptual approach to Jiu-Jitsu and has recently developed a system for what he calls "The Roadhouse Choke." Dallas O’Regan is a black belt under Jeff Joslin and the owner of Dallas O’Regan Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Cochrane, Alberta Canada. I had the pleasure of meeting Dallas after our students have competed against each other multiple times this last year at a few different competitions. His youth competition team is very high level, and he has a few young students that are standouts on the world stage. The ADCC Vancouver Open has finished and I am here to tell my biggest stories, reflections, and takeaways from the tournament. When we begin a new skill, we never really know where to focus our learning. In a systems-based activity like Jiu Jitsu, as beginners, we need to know where to first focus our attention. What systems are most valuable, and what makes these systems so important early on in our journey? I discuss my top 5 systems for every beginner (you may be surprised). Also, I discuss my experience competing last weekend at The Revolution in Puyallup, Washington… spoiler alert; I hurt myself. In a sport as limitless as Jiu Jitsu, every coach must ask themselves the same question… How the hell am I going to teach this stuff to people? With so many ways to structure your practices, how do we know if we are doing it right? In this episode, I discuss training to become a better athlete for Jiu Jistu, separating the weight room from the tatami, making drilling productive, and the ecological approach.
