  • Summary

  • The "Setting The Stage" podcast provides a historical backdrop to what a nurse emotionally experiences via working in a COVID ward, an ER handling COVID patients and an ICU.  The history shared has value, because combatants in war and COVID nurses' emotional experiences have significant overlap.  It is also important to begin with military history, because a significant portion of the later podcast material is derived from research on coping done with US Marines, US Navy Sailors and US Army Soldiers who have fought in Afghanistan, Iraq, Kuwait and in the Global War On Terror (GWOT).  These brave citizen combatants are the research pathfinders teaching all of us in the land of emotional survival in the combat zone. It is with the pioneers of the Viet Nam conflict that we begin.  Why?  Nurses cited this war as relevant to their COVID experiences.
