    In August, 2014, 16 sharks players from 2011 plead guilty to unwittingly taking banned substances and accepted 12-month bans that were backdated to November, 2013 for their involvement. The bans saw them sit out of the remaining few weeks of the season. This is the events that lead to one of the NRL's biggest scandals.

    The Calciopoli scandal involved five football teams, two leagues and a number of referees, with the latter coerced into rigging games in 2006. Many prison sentences were handed out to sporting directors and referees, but after almost a decade of investigation, all were acquitted in 2015
