  • EKPO Encore: Ani DiFranco
    Jun 13 2022

Hey There EKPO Fans! We're continuing our focus on Women First with an encore presentation of this chat with Ani DiFranco. Enjoy!

    -------------------

On this episode of Plus One Eric talks with guitarist and folk singer Ani DiFranco, who’s gained critical recognition in the neo-Americana folk world for unaffectedly blending her eclectic sound with socially and politically charged lyrics. She is also widely accredited for mothering the DIY movement in music. DiFranco started her own record label, Righteous Babe, when she was 19 and has since released 22 studio albums. In 2019 she put out a memoir, titled No Walls and the Recurring Dream, in which she details her life as a musician and activist. Last month Ani released a double single, “Do or Die” and “Contagious,” along with a music video for the former. The video promotes voting by dropping the viewer into an illustrious, quintessential display of the streets of New Orleans, to culminate with a social justice street-dance-party, ending in a silent tribute to justice by the Magnolia Bridge. The slick, Wurlitzer-decorated groove in combination with her versatile vocal dynamics provide a nifty instrumental section to compliment her message of unity and justice. Ani and Kraz talk through her recent projects, the journey to the digital age of music, and about her musical style choices and breakthroughs. Ani goes in depth on the influences that brought her to her current standing, and how she did it herself to become a matriarch for the DIY movement in music. • EKPO Encore: Victoria Canal
    Jun 6 2022

    Hey There Plus One Fans!

Over the next few months, we're going to revisit some classic episodes of the show. This week, we continue our focus on Women First with Victoria Canal. Enjoy!

    ---------------------------------------------

In this episode of Plus One Eric talks to his good friend and one of his favorite young artists, singer-songwriter Victoria Canal.

Having grown up across three continents and moving every year, from an early age Victoria used songwriting to channel her fears of not fitting in. It’s Canal’s complete comfort in her own skin that lets her trust audiences and be truly vulnerable with them, frequently bringing fans to tears. Her newest EP, Victoria, released on August 28th, represents a giant step forward for Canal as a writer and producer, and the resulting tracks convey a maturity far beyond her 22 years. Hear Victoria tell Eric why a seaside cliff near Barcelona was the only place to record such a profoundly personal album, and why it feels right to release it during such a difficult year.

  • Otis McDonald
    Feb 7 2022

“... when I listened back to “The Man In Me,” I was like okay we created this via “satellite” … but it really felt live, and it had a feel ... It felt like we were a band.” -- Eric Krasno

For the first episode of 2022, Eric Krasno returns to sit down with Otis McDonald to celebrate the release of their new album, Always! In this conversation, you’ll hear an in-depth rundown of the making of the record, including the story of how the two met through Adam Deitch in the beginning of the pandemic, the genesis of the Otis McDonald project, and using demo vocals for final mixes on the album. They also talk about Otis’ home base at Hyde Street Studios, which gave birth to classic albums by artists including the Grateful Dead and Herbie Hancock, using technology to work together remotely, and take a look inside of Kraz's musical headspace when he talks about the writing process for the album.

Joe Bagale, also known as Otis McDonald, lives by the philosophy that there are only two kinds of music; good music and bad music. He was born in upstate New York, but his tenure in San Francisco was where he definitively honed his craft, releasing three albums under his name from 2008 to 2014. Following the success of his early releases, Joe was commissioned by YouTube to write and record 30 new tracks for their audio library, which was the beginning of a new project he calls Otis McDonald. Playing all the instruments, writing, producing, mixing, and mastering 30 songs in a 3 month period, it proves to be his funkiest and most interesting music to date. Joe has shared the stage with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Bob Weir and Mickey Hart, Mike Gordon, and many other legendary artists, and by the end of this episode, you'll know why he's had the success that he's had in recent years.

  • Neal Francis
    Nov 29 2021

On this episode of Plus One, singer-songwriter and masterful pianist Neal Francis sits down with Kraz to discuss making his new record while living and recording in an old church, his early influences and the musical experiences that lead to the formation of the instrumental funk band called the Heard, and his recent tour with the Black Pumas. Neal and Kraz also trade stories of taking essential big leaps early in their careers, and talk about the Chicago music scene, Neal’s methodology for writing music and lyrics, and much more.

Neal Francis is a singer and songwriter from Oak Park, IL. “From a very early age, I was playing late into the night in a very stream-of-consciousness kind of way,” Neal has previously stated while citing influences ranging from ragtime to gospel soul to The Who. With a prodigy-like gift for piano, he sat in with a dozen different blues acts in Chicago clubs as a teenager, and formed a widely beloved funk band called The Heard before going solo. His new album, In Plain Sight, came out earlier this month, and is a portrait of profound upheaval and weary resilience, presented in a kaleidoscopic sound that’s endlessly absorbing.

  • Nate Smith
    Nov 15 2021

This week on Plus One, drummer Nate Smith joins Kraz to talk about the making of his new record, Kinfolk 2: See the Birds, his eclectic range of influences which spans from The Police to Living Colour, and how he developed his vamp-based groove style that still allows for the addition of rhythmic color through the drums. You’ll also hear Nate dive deep on a songwriting credit that he received on a Michael Jackson tune, and Kraz tells Nate about a similar experience he had when 50 Cent used one of his own beats. The two friends also discuss how they were inspired by Herbie Hancock’s implementation of new-age technologies in his music, discovering James Brown and other funk artists through hip hop samples, and why Nate is thankful that he didn’t grow up around other musicians.

Nate Smith is an American drummer, songwriter, producer, and three-time Grammy nominee from Chesapeake, Virginia. He has been a key piece in reinvigorating the international music scene with his visceral, instinctive, and deep-rooted style of drumming. His 2x Grammy-nominated debut album, KINFOLK: Postcards from Everywhere, exhibits the fusion of his original modern jazz compositions with R&B, pop, and hip-hop. In recent years, through a series of viral videos, he has emerged as one of the most influential and popular drummers of his generation. His videos have been viewed millions of times and have inspired countless musicians and fans, and in this episode he tells Kraz about the creative work that goes into his music.

  • Jimmy Vivino
    Nov 1 2021

“... we all have something. Don’t be so worried about what the guy next to you has, just do your thing. Do your thing because your personality belongs to only you, and your playing should be your personality. That’s the best advice I could give man, be fearless …” -- Jimmy Vivino

On this episode of Plus One, guitarist Jimmy Vivino joins Kraz to talk about his familial roots in music and how he gravitated towards the guitar, keeping it simple during improvisation, and nurturing musical interest in young artists. You’ll hear Jimmy and Kraz dive deep on blues guitar playing and talk about all components of the style from gear, to soloing techniques, to conceptual philosophies about the instrument. They also discuss the calling from the blues that Jimmy felt as a young guitarist, Jimmy’s deep appreciation for black music, and jammin’ with Muddy Waters.

Jimmy Vivino is an American guitarist, producer, and musical director. He is best known as the bandleader of Jimmy Vivino and the Basic Cable Band, the house band for the TBS late night program, Conan. Aside from his work with the Basic Cable Band, Jimmy has played with many other exceptional groups including Beatles tribute band The Fab Faux, alongside another former Plus One guest, Will Lee.
