  • 西海市の大島町というところはその名の通り島ですが、1999年に大島大橋が開通して車でも行けるようになりました。この大島というところはかつて炭鉱で栄えていましたが、戦後の石炭から石油へのエネルギー転換政策に伴い1970年に閉山してしまいました。その後は造船が行われるようになり、現在は「ルビーのしずく」と名付けられた糖度の高いブランド・トマトが育てられています。
