Gail began life in 1953 in Indianapolis, Indiana, only weighing 2 pounds and two-and-a-half months premature. The doctors put Gail and her twin brother in separate incubators for six weeks. The 100% pure oxygen for 24/7 left Gail with partial vision enabling her to watch TV inches from the screen, read headline-size newsprint, and distinguish bright colors. She points out that she loved to draw, play with her shadow, and look at picture books. Her twin, (who was not affected) played happily together with her older brother, getting in and out of trouble, riding bikes, and chasing butterflies. Dad and Mom didn’t know how to handle my blindness. They punished when they should have nurtured, and coddled when they should have let me learn. They had a difficult time showing any feelings except those of anger, pain, hate, and fear. Though later in life my Dad’s mantra was “Have fun kid,” as a child, happiness and joy were not a part of my vocabulary or experience.
Gail has had the pleasure of building and owning her former Habitat for Humanity home, written and published her memoire, Soaring into Greatness, a Blind Woman’s Vision to Live her Dreams and Fly, became Ms. Colorado Senior America Queen 2013, fourth runner up in the National Ms. Senior America Pageant, traveled to Australia and climbed the Sydney Harbor bridge and attended “Carmen” at the Sydney Opera House, and now have my sixth Seeing Eye dog.
Gail has spoken to audiences in Florida, New Jersey, Indiana, South Dakota, Colorado, and California. She has also been on radio and TV, and more than 25 podcast shows (three outside the USA: Canada, England, and Australia) and have written more than 50 blogs covering topics as “Playing in the Dark,” “Follow Your Dog,” and “How to Say Goodbye.”
