TRACK NOTES: Hooj Choon was one of my most influential record labels when I was a young DJ. Hooj Choons was formed by Alex Simons and Red Jerry in 1990 and existed until 2003, releasing 136 singles and a dozen or so album-length compilations.  This mix captures that late-90s, early 2000s’ big room’ sound. The Hooj Choon sound was distinctive for the day – techno, but not gooey, cheesy commercial “techno;” more ethereal than “trance-y;” more “progressive” than ‘house’ of the day. Several of these tracks were staples when I resident at the Underground in Portland or Purgatory in Provincetown.  Sadly though I never owned many of these tracks “back in the day” as they were often hard to find as imports into the USA. Luckily, much of the HC catalog has been released on Bandcamp. Many of the Bandcamp tracks are clearly vinyl rips, though – so expect the occasional pop or hiss.   The title track is “Son Of A Gun” by JX, which was a massive record for me back in the day. (And it was a good excuse to choose some interesting cover art.) Other notable tracks include Gloworm’s “I Lift My Cup,” Sanctuary Of Love by The Source, “Hypnotized” by Oscar G and Stryke, and “The Things That Dreams Are Made Of” by The Human League (a record I wish I had discovered earlier).  I hope you enjoy this mix as much as I did making it. - #DJTimStaney #LifeIsShortDance #WeAreMadeToMove  TRACK LIST: 1. • Episode 84: It's A Sin - An Obsession With The Pet Shop Boys
    Feb 28 2022
TRACK NOTES: This is "one of those mixes" that I have been working on for months and required extensive track prep. The Pet Shop Boys (and Dusty Springfield) are important in the history of gay music, so it was important to me that I could get this mix right before releasing it.  I edited a few mixes for mix-ability in Rekordbox DJ. And many of the mixes here of Pet Shop Boys' classics are unusual or 'not expected.' For instance, I chose the 'Thee Werq'n B!Tches' remix of West End Girl instead of the customary 'Shep Pettibone Mix,' while excellent, that was most often played in clubs.  I also wrestled with playing the Obsession cut of 'Where The Streets Have No Name / Can't Take My Eyes Off You' because it was not the PSB. Back in the day, I played a remix service version [Rhythm Stick?] of the track I no longer have, which explains the "Obsession with..." part of the title.  The set's highlight is the 'Barry Harris 2021' mix of 'It's A Sin' which claimed the title track. The lyrics to 'It's A Sin' are relatable in so many ways for gay men and lesbians, especially of older generations, and before "a more tolerant society" emerged.  I hope you enjoy this mix as much as I did making it. - #DJTimStaney #LifeIsShortDance #WeAreMadeToMove  TRACK LIST: 1 Somewhere (Extended Mix) - Pet Shop Boys //  2 Beautiful People - Pet Shop Boys //  3 What Have I Done To Deserve This (Staney's Rekordbox Edit of the Disco Mix) - Pet Shop Boys //  4 Paninaro (Staney's Rekordbox Edit of Pet Shop Boys and David Jacob's Italian Mix) - Pet Shop Boys //  5 Opportunities [Let's Make Lots of Money] (Staney's Rekordbox Edit) - Pet Shop Boys //  6 Love Comes Quickly (Staney's Rekordbox Edit of DJ-J-ME Soul Shack ReTouch) - Pet Shop Boys //  7 Axis (Boys Noize Remix) - Pet Shop Boys //  8 Always on My Mind & In My House (Remastered) - Pet Shop Boys //  9 West End Girls (Thee Werq'n B!Tches Mirrorball Mix) - Pet Shop Boys //  10 The Way It Used To Be (Left Of Love Dub) - Pet Shop Boys //  11 Heart (Joel Dickinson Anthem Mix) - Pet Shop Boys //  12 Monkey Business (Dirty Disco Eagle Houston Remix) - Pet Shop Boys //  13 Say It To Me (Electro Tech C-Rod Mix) - Pet Shop Boys //  14 On Social Media - Pet Shop Boys //  15 Pandemonium (The Stars And The Sun Dub) - Pet Shop Boys //  16 Dreamland (Joel Dickinson Mirrorball Extended Mix) - Pet Shop Boys ft. • Episode 72: Pretty N'Pnk
    Jan 2 2022
TRACK NOTES: This is a mix of edited/remastered/refreshed alternative club/extended mixes from the '80s. There are some great artists on this mix including Depeche Mode, New Order, and Erasure, the holy trinity of '80s alternative bands that were popular in dance clubs. There are also some more obscure pieces like "Pineapple Face" by Revenge, a truly great song that didn't get much airplay back in the day (likely due to its unusual name). There are also some killer reconstructions of classic tracks including Barry Harris's reworking of "People Are People" and Dario Caminita's 'Revibe' mix of "It's My Life" by Talk Talk. I hope you enjoy this mix as much as I did making it. - #DJTimStaney #LifeIsShortDance #WeAreMadeToMove TRACK LIST:  1 Such a Shame (Staney's 'Extended Mix' Edit) - Talk Talk //  2 Wild Boys (Staney's 'Wilder Than Wild Boys Extended' Edit) - Duran Duran //  3 Don't You Want Me (ARP Extended Edit) - The Human League //  4 The War Song (Ultimate Dance Mix) - Culture Club //  5 True Faith (12" Morning Sun Remix Extended) - New Order //  6 Doctor! Doctor! (Long Version) - Thompson Twins //  7 People Are People (Barry Harris 2021 Remix) - Depeche Mode //  8 The Look of Love (U.S. Remix) - ABC //  9 What's On Your Mind (Pure Energy) (Club Mix) - Information Society //  10 Never Ending Story (Staney's '1st Chapter' Edit) - Obsession //  11 Stop!
