  • #43 Double Double, Toil and Trouble. Fire burn and scoreboard bubble.
    Nov 8 2024

In which, Sue, Jules and Brian are joined by a plethora of scoreboard operators to contrast how scoring differs when operating a scoreboard.

Covered by the discussions are: Fancy scoreboards/replay screens at club level; Magic tricks to make rain go away; Kiss cam; How boards are driven; When to play replays; Pre-match nerves; Scoring priorities; Out of season preparation; Alternative uses for a scoreboard; Scoreboarders' helpline; Scorers names on scoreboards; Manual scoreboards; High drama at Lord's.

Cait asked for more cameras and when is a bug not a bug? Jane questioned what sport they were playing. Mike had to be identified by location. Cait and Steven admitted to being part of a coven!

With thanks to Mike Birtwistle (Emirates Old Trafford), Mike Turner (Cheltenham Cricket Festival), Jane Hough (Derbyshire CCC and Ockbrook & Borrowash CC), Cait Fraser-Burton (Ockbrook & Borrowash CC) and Steven Horsley (Ockbrook & Borrowash CC) for sharing their experiences of scoreboard operating.

  • #42 Lies, damned lies and scoring statistics
    Aug 17 2024

In which, Sue, Jules and Brian are joined by guest Richard Isaacs to talk about providing statistics for cricket commentators and in particular the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA in June 2024.

Along the way the quartet discuss: disability cricket at Lord's; the Vatican v the Bishop's Conference; providing broadcast statistics; maintaining personal well being while working from home; scorers in the corner; working as a team; scoring as the best job in the world; statistical story telling; cricket stats databases; the hunt for historical records; cracking the USA; frisbee throwing above cricket; the oldest cricket fixture of all time; international T20 stats; scorer recognition.

Yes we really did cram all that and more into 40 minutes and asked the 4 key questions:

    • What do you call a group of 5 balls?
    • Has that happened before?
    • Who are the scorers?
    • Does the pope play cricket?

We also came up with some topics for future episodes, so stay tuned for more and make sure to keep in touch with Cricket Scorers Untallied via the usual channels.

  • #41 Taking Refuge At The Oval
    Jul 25 2024

In which Julia Farman and Tom Rogers talk about their experience of scoring at The Oval (in London) on Refugee Day 2024. Also mentioned are: Streatham & Marlborough CC; Displaying milestones; Refugee cricket; Publishing players' names and images; Play-Cricket display names; Registering players; Merging players on Play-Cricket; Asking permission; Scoreboard operators.

There must be a serious lack of cake at The Oval, as it doesn't get a single mention in this episode!

Thank you to Tom for being an avid supporter of Cricket Scorers Untallied and for sharing your experiences with us in this episode.

  • #40 My Cricket Camera?
    Jan 5 2024

In which Sue welcomes you to 2024 and Mark chats with Andy Nott about using cameras while scoring for the MCC.

There's an abundance of technical terms and who knew that camera poles, battery packs, wireless point to point links and multiple tripods would become standard equipment for scorers? There's a shout out to some stunning locations but also some remote (resourceless) places. What do you do on encountering a flimsy sightscreen or when your memory goes? I can't quite remember the answer to that one!

Thanks to Mark Shepherd and Andy Nott for sharing their experience on camera scoring for Marylebone Cricket Club (or My Cricket Camera).

    Oct 26 2023

In which Brian, Jules and Sue catch up after the 2023 season and chat mainly about food and beverages with a little bit of cricket scoring between bites.

Cropping up in conversation you will find: regular stewards; grounds that can be circumnavigated; the price of tea; gypsy tart watch; the Village Knock Out Final; the Milk Tray man (other chocolates are available); handing round scoring devices; paper versus scoring app; chasing the sun; hello to Rory from Durban (SA); scoring in the CWC2023; a 'correspondent' question; indoor cricket.

To stop the team rambling and be more focussed in future episodes, please get in touch and suggest a topic for discussion via the usual channels.

  • #38 T20 Vision or Cricket?
    Sep 7 2023

In which Sue, Brian and Jules talk to Paul Toplis, Paul Stubbs and Carol Hughes about scoring visually impaired (VI) cricket at the 2023 International Blind Sport Federation (IBSA) World Games in Birmingham.

Cropping up in our conversation were a vicars/priests team, runners, Hit Wicket dismissals, underarm bowling, more runners, being quiet, balls with ball bearings in, an all run 5, batters at the wrong ends, helpful shirt numbers, paper backups and did I mention runners?

In a radical change to the norm - there is no mention of cake!

Mark Long joins the conversation to talk about scoring domestic VI cricket in the UK and if you want to try this yourself, please contact Paul Toplis on bcewscorer@gmail.com, as more scorers are always wanted in this format of cricket.

  • #37 Ashes to Ashes
    Aug 5 2023

In which Jules, Sue and Brian apologise for the gap between episode 36 and 37 and talk to Mike Turner, Izzy Howe and Andy Lynch about scoring the men's and women's Ashes series in Summer 2023. During the discussion they get side-tracked by scorebox camaraderie, extra strong mints, moving scoreboxes, red light bulbs, DRS, 'The Book', top and bottom scoring, scorebox catering and of course cake (well chocolate gateaux). Much pondering is done over when a batter is deemed out, time-wise ...

Apologies to Mark and Brian for the all female cast with the exception of an interview with broadcast scorers, Anil Meher and Michael Ferger.
