    In today's episode, Maeve speaks to multi-disciplinary artist Hormazd Nariewalla. This is an invigorating conversation that takes place at the home of the permanent collection of his work, JP Hackett on Savile Row. Born in India, Nariewalla's work is a mix of collage, print-making and sculpture which originate on the surfaces of antique, vintage, and bespoke tailoring patterns. For this year's Art In Mayfair, Hormazd has extended his residency at Hackett’s Savile Row and has filled the atelier with colourful homages to tailoring. In this conversation we hear about his strong work ethic, the spiritual connection between clothes and their wearers, and the powerful advice given to him by Sir Paul Smith.

His contribution to this year's Sculpture Trail, titled 'How Soon Is Now' and presented by Opera Gallery, barely seems to touch the ground while it's striking orange hues are set perfectly against the green backdrop of Berkeley Square. In this episode we hear about Pieter's working practice, his inspirations as an artist, and the joy and playfulness that public art can bring.

    In this episode of Art In Mayfair 2023, host Maeve Doyle speaks to self-taught artist and sculptor, and renowned modern furniture maker, Johnny Hawkes. Johnny’s piece, Sphelix is part of the Mayfair Sculpture Trail and is outside Fenwick’s. At the start of 2023, Hawkes began developing his sculpture “SPHELIX” on a monumental scale which he says is the perfect shape, organic in cure and industrial in form: Sphelix has been an obsession of his for half of his lifetime. The Sphelix is a new shape, the joining of a sphere and a helix, a new global shape and a symbol for anti-racism, the joining of communities. We cover a lot in this episode including Johnny’s love of wood, his brief stint at art school and other artists whose work he admires. He also shares his inspirations, his process of work, how he makes sense of his ideas and puts them into a physicality.     In this episode host Maeve Doyle speaks to Dario Vargas. Dario is a Colombian-born contemporary fine artist whose work is currently on show in the Luxury Italian menswear brand, Canali, New Bond Street Dario’s work draws influence from the Renaissance and Baroque periods to cast a connection with our behaviour and psychology in the modern world. We hear how Dario knew he always wanted to be an artist from a young age, how the church was his source of inspiration in his small town in Colombia and how he moved from the world of advertising to art full time when he moved to London. Dario shares his early years experiences of being a full time artist and how mental health and depression played a part in his journey, the lessons he learnt during this period of his life and how he shares those learnings with others using his art. Spirituality and teaching play are a big part of Dario’s process, and we hear how the two-way relationship means he learns from the students and vice versa.

    “Ground control to Major Tom, commencing countdown engines on, detach from station and may God's love be with you” - both film director Nick Roeg’s cult classic ‘The Man Who Fell to Earth’ and many of David Bowies lyrics emote a similar reaction to that of Breuer-Weil’s most powerful works, ‘Visitor I’ and ‘Visitor V’ recently installed in Berkeley Square.

    Sitting on one of the parks many benches and listening to the esoteric philosophical debate that fuel the artists practice, his notebooks crammed with pencil sketches and diagrams still fresh in my mind, I mused that if last glimpse of the world was that of ‘Mayfair Sculpture Trail’s’ two visitor’s then the narrative must surely be “the planet Earth is blue and there’s nothing left to do..” D. Bowie
