About this listen

There's this weird gap in life that's fuelled by cheap tacos and even cheaper tequila - also known as our twenties. It's a specific limbo of being suspended between being a teenager and a Proper Adult, and though it's wildly confusing, often lonely, sometimes embarrassing and frequently daunting, there's also a whole lot of magic to be found in the chaos. It's a time when we're finding our own voices, cementing our relationships and starting to fulfil our big ambitions (or simply just working out what they are).

Michelle Andrews and Zara McDonald, creators of the award-winning pop culture podcast Shameless, are two of the many twentysomething women trying to make sense of it all. They definitely don't have all the answers but they know that mapping out our place in the world is a little bit easier when we do it together.

Brimming with wit and unflinching honesty, here are their stories and personal puzzles about life as twentysomethings: from heartbreak and mental health challenges to overcoming career setbacks and letting go of fear. (Not forgetting the deeper meaning behind the state of their fridges and why it's so damn good to ghost out of a friend's party.)

Join Zara and Michelle as they navigate their journeys between the women they are now and who they want to be. You just might find tiny pieces of yourself in the space between the first page and the last.©2020 Zara McDonald and Michelle Andrews (P)2020 Penguin Random House Australia

Editorial reviews

Horrified by the idea of going out twice in one week but still won’t book your own doctor’s appointment? Then The Space Between, a relatable guide to life in your 20s, is your next must-listen.

Already claiming a cult-favourite podcast (Shameless) among their achievements, Melbournites Zara McDonald and Michelle Andrews are the perfect guides to the weird limbo between childhood and adulthood. As you listen, they’ll cover everything from light-hearted anecdotes (like forgetting to take your car to the mechanic) to hard-hitting themes like sexism, rejection and toxic friendships. Bringing into the audiobook the warm, funny personalities that made their podcast such a success, McDonald and Andrews are like the older sisters you wish you had and they won't be shy to share some uncomfortable truths with you.

Spanning four main themes—Love, Ambition, Mind & Body and Voice—each section is split into short and relatable stories, in the format of email dialogues, checklists and more, making it the perfect listen to dive in and out of wherever you may be.

Offering comfort, advice and a few laughs along the way, this audiobook is the perfect companion to take with you into fully fledged adulthood.

Well done!!

Such an amazing book. The writing was beautiful and encapsulated the worries, woes and celebrations of your 20s so well! As a 23 year old I related to so many parts. Lovely vulnerability as well, it was tough to read but necessary

Fab book that I wish I had in my teen years/early 20s

Have listened to Mich and Zara for a while and they feel like old pals. It was great to listen to the book in audiobook form as it felt like a big 7 hour episode! The writing was so great and I honestly have never resonated with writing for 20s year olds as much as I did with this book. Thank you girls for being so raw and sharing experiences a lot of us have had but are scared to speak about.

Wasn’t all relevant now, but it will be.

I loved this book.

There are some sections which naturally aren’t as relevant to myself or my life now. But there are others that were too relevant. I know that I will come back and re-read this book as my life develops and I also find myself applying the knowledge to my friends as well. An absolute must read even if you are not a shameless listener.

A book that makes you feel accepted for all of the pieces of yourself that you haven't accepted yet.

Beautifully written and read

Both Zara and Michelle have shared pieces of themselves within the pages of this book. Allowing the world to see things through their perspective and life experiences. This is a great glimpse into the roller coaster that is a persons 20’s and reminds all of us that we’re not alone, even when we feel like we are. Thank you!

Fabulous read!

One of the best books I’ve read in a long time. It shares experiences, advice, and the realities of your 20s so well and does so in such a self aware and raw way. Loved every moment of it. I laughed, I cried, but more importantly I related. I felt seen and heard and I am so grateful for this experience.

Loved this

Looked forward to reading this everyday. Felt so relatable and life affirming as a uni student to hear from two amazing women also in their 20s sharing their essays. Will be recommending to friends. Thank you Michelle and Zara!

Own the book but I read too slow hahaha

I pre-ordered the book (#1107 haha) but I read far too slowly and my friends already finished and we NEEDED to talk about it. So I also bought the audiobook and it’s been AMAZING!!! It just feels like a long episode of the podcast. ITS GREAT!!!
