Publisher's Summary

We always have a choice, Pema Chödrön teaches: We can let the circumstances of our lives harden us and make us increasingly resentful and afraid, or we can let them soften us and make us kinder. Here Pema provides the tools to deal with the problems and difficulties that life throws our way. This wisdom is always available to us, she teaches, but we usually block it with habitual patterns rooted in fear. Beyond that fear lies a state of openheartedness and tenderness. This audiobook teaches us how to awaken our basic goodness and connect with others, to accept ourselves and others complete with faults and imperfections, and to stay in the present moment by seeing through the strategies of ego that cause us to resist life as it is.

One of the best teachers

I love Pema Chodron, and this is one of the best. It’s a combination of practical wisdom and more complex Buddhist principles, some of which feel deeply insightful but sometimes out of reach for an ordinary, non monastic person living life. But I trust that there are layers of wisdom in here, and I’ve no doubt each listen will reveal something new that I’m ready to hear at the time. It’s a shame Pema hasn’t narrated this as her voice is special, but the narration is still nice and suits the style of the book.

A true gift

There is such lightness of heart within the way Pema approaches such a deep and heavy topic such as suffering. I appreciate the honest and straightforward way with which she leads us through various Buddhist practices and concepts. This is definitely a book that I will return to in order to extract every ounce of wisdom it contains. This is a book that anyone who recognises the need to cultivate compassion, will find value in. Thank you Pema, these teachings are truly a gift.
