About this listen
On the Road was written in the United States in the 1950s by Jack Kerouac. It was a strange time. Mediocrity was common. Intellectuals, including writers, pushed for a national cultural renaissance. Kerouac and his writer friends were called the “Beat Generation”. “The Beats” were considered countercultural, living life from the margins and seeing the world in a different way. As Jack Kerouac said, Dean is the “heart and soul” of the Beats.
Our interpretation is divided into three parts. The first part concerns why the protagonist begins to live on the road, the second part talks about what he finds on the road, and the third part focuses on how we as listeners can better understand the spiritual core of On the Road.
