About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
Self-care has become a staple in women's lives. From juice cleanses to yoga workshops to luxury bamboo sheets, we are sold breezy fixes in pastel-coloured packages, and then made to feel at fault when they don't work, like there is something wrong with us. But we are not broken: the game is rigged against us. And if we set aside those activities that don't serve us, we can all reconnect with ourselves and become agents of change in our lives.
In Real Self-Care, psychiatrist and women's mental health specialist Dr Pooja Lakshmin will help you understand what a real and sustainable practice of caring for yourself looks like. Using case studies, clinical research and actionable strategies to deal with common problems, this audiobook will help you set boundaries and move past guilt, treat yourself with compassion, live a life aligned with your values and assert your power. The result - having ownership over your life - is nothing less than a personal and social revolution.
Because real self-care is not a noun - it's a verb. And while it may not be as easy as buying that crystal-infused water bottle, the rewards are infinite.
PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio.

"A compassionate and powerful approach to true wellbeing. Real Self-Care is a helpful and timely book, and one that every modern woman needs." (Julia Samuel)
"A bracingly honest, galvanizing and necessarily provocative look at what 'self-care' looks at - through a political and feminist lens. Expect to fold down every other page." (Pandora Sykes)
"Invaluable. For anyone mothering, working, simply trying to be their 'best self', this book will offer clarity and a new way forward." (Katherine Ormerod)

A journey back to true self
Empowers reader to move beyond or deeper than traditional approaches to self care that centre on accessing external methods of selfcare. The author provides suggestions based on experience and evidence based practice that focus on threading internal self care principles throughout life. This includes making choices to enable greater agency and realign with your values. This is real self care. The inner work we can do to shift ourselves and therefore society more broadly. Highly recommended, congratulations to Author

This will make a difference
Real Self-Care by Pooja Laxmin is a refreshing take on self-help books that are often too generic or preachy. As someone who usually avoids such books, I was pleasantly surprised by the clarity, honesty, and practicality of this one.
One of the strengths of Real Self-Care is that it doesn't pretend to have all the answers or to be a one-size-fits-all solution. Instead, Pooja Laxmin acknowledges the complexity of self-care and the different challenges that women (and men) face in taking care of their mental health. She also distinguishes between real self-care, which involves intentional and sustainable practices that enhance one's well-being, and faux self-care, which can be superficial, temporary, or even harmful.
The book is structured in a way that makes it easy to follow and apply the advice. Each chapter covers a specific aspect of real self-care, such as setting boundaries, managing stress, practicing gratitude, and cultivating self-compassion. Within each chapter, Pooja Laxmin offers clear explanations, relevant examples, and practical tips, often backed up by research and her own clinical experience. The language is accessible and engaging, without being overly simplistic or patronizing.
What I appreciated most about Real Self-Care is the emphasis on seeking professional help when needed and the guidance on how to do so effectively. Pooja Laxmin acknowledges that self-care is not always enough and that some mental health issues require the expertise and support of trained professionals. She also provides a helpful checklist of what to look for in a therapist or counselor, including credentials, specialties, and personal fit.
Overall, Real Self-Care is a valuable resource for anyone who wants to improve their mental health and well-being in a realistic and compassionate way. While it may resonate more with women, I believe that men can also benefit from the insights and strategies offered in the book. Whether you're a seasoned self-helper or a skeptic like me, give Real Self-Care a chance and see how it can make a difference in your life.

a few good tips if you really listen
while there were some good tips in thus book, they were hidden underneath a lot of toxic feminism. it would have been useful if there was a PDF with worksheets for the various tasks that are in this book. It's hard to find the tasks underneath the feminism.
