Der zu den "Krähenfelder Geschichten" gehörige Text war bereits im Februar 1875 in Westermanns Monatsheften abgedruckt worden. Der alte Justizrat Scholten aus Hannover, die eigentliche Zentralfigur der Erzählung, hat zwei Jugendfreunde von eigentümlichem Charakter. Beide verliert er; der eine macht sich heimlich-still davon, der andere stirbt in einer Katastrophe, die er - oder doch der Justizrat? - ausgelöst hat. Mit der titelgebenden jüdischen Bankierswitwe Salome von Veitor verbindet Scholten eine in die Tiefe wachsende Freundschaft, die ihre Erfüllung in der gemeinsamen Sorge um die Tochter des einen Jugendfreundes findet.
