About this listen

Life has a way of provoking us with traffic jams and computer malfunctions, with emotionally distant partners and crying children—and before we know it, we're upset. We feel terrible, and then we end up saying and doing things that only make matters worse. But it doesn't have to be that way, says Pema Chödrön. It is possible to relate constructively to the inevitable shocks, losses, and frustrations of life so that we can find true happiness. The key, Pema explains, is not biting the "hook" of our habitual responses. In this recorded weekend retreat, Pema draws on Buddhist teachings from The Way of the Bodhisattva to reveal how we can:

* stay centered in the midst of difficulty

* improve stressful relationships

* step out of the downward spiral of self-hatred

* awaken compassion for ourselves and others

Slow to start but finishes well

Pretty good. Slow start focused only on anger but the rest expands and has a different style of other Buddhism books. Maybe not as deep as thich nhat Hahn but it many ways this is more practical and down to earth to every day situations

Weaponless wisdom

Having been born and raised in a toxic religious environment, where scripture was forged into weaponised dogma for the purposes of facilitating separatism, exclusionism — an 'us and them' reality — I personally find these teachings refreshingly neutral. And I think many would benefit from them, as being tribal, we can tend to look on others as outsiders, even unwittingly. I find buddhist teachings to be a little removed from reality at times however, and while the teachings here employ real world examples, I feel that its core concepts are perhaps more conducive to monastery life. Sure beats the hell out of christianity though in my book.

Great book

It was so perceptive and genuinely spoken.
I learned a lot about my anger and would recommend this audible if you are struggling with patience.
It is Buddhist based and I am a follower of Christ, however, I was open enough to hear the poignant gens she spoke of to assist me in self control, which is one if the fruit of the Spirit. I’ve listened twice and plan to listen a 3rd time as well. Thank you!

Useful for frustration rather than intense anger

This book has some good ideas, but we now know much anger is caused by depression, anxiety, sleep and PTSD this book will not help with complex causes.
