Der "Dräumling" ist in dieser Erzählung einerseits ein fiktiver Sumpf - beziehungsweise die Rezitation von Versen, die der skurrile Paddenauer Rektor verfasst hat. Turbulent geht es zu in dieser Erzählung, und Raabe macht es einem nicht gerade leicht, der Handlung zu folgen, zumal mindestens eine der der Hauptpersonen die fatale Eigenschaft hat, nicht präzise zu sagen, was sie meint. Der "Sumpfmaler" nimmt gelegentlich seine Gesprächspartner so auf den Arm, dass diese verwirrt zurückbleiben, und so mag es auch manchem Hörer nach dem ersten Hören gehen. Ein zweites Hören könnte helfen, den Witz dieser "harmlosen Posse aus der Kinderstube des Lebens" (Raabe im 23. Kapitel über seine Erzählung) voll zu erfassen und zu genießen.
