Zaro Weil was born in the United States. For the first ten years of her professional life she worked as a dancer, performer, writer, educator, choreographer and theatre director in a theatre/dance company which she founded in St Louis, Missouri. The company, Metro Theater Circus, travelled to schools, universities and art centres all over America, including several performances at the Kennedy Centre in Washington DC. It continues to perform to this day, as Metro Theatre Company. Metro won many national grants and awards for arts innovation under Zaro's leadership. During her St Louis years Zaro also worked as an adjunct professor at Webster University and Washington University, teaching dance, drama and the creative arts to teachers in master’s degree programmes. She studied the writing of poetry at Washington University, notably with Donald Finkle. After moving to London in the 1980s, Zaro performed in fringe theatre, studied flute and dance and wrote several books: Mud,Moon and Me, a poetry book for children, was published by Orchard Books in the UK and Houghton Mifflin in the USA. The American Quilt Story, a social history of American quilts inspired by Zaro’s large personal collection, was published by Harper Collins in the UK and Rodale Press in the USA. In 1992 Zaro founded the non-fiction publishing company MQ Publications which she ran successfully for 15 years, building a team of 35 employees operating from offices in London and New York. The company was sold in 2007, and Zaro moved to southern France where she has dedicated her time to writing poetry, stories and plays for children. In 2017 Zaro formed a new company, ZaZaKids Books, to publish her own books in partnership with Troika Books and other publishers. Firecrackers was published in March 2018 to great acclaim. It is an anthology of poems, haiku, raps, rhymes, fairy tales and more, and is illustrated by Jo Riddell. It was shortlisted for the North Somerset Teachers Poetry Prize and for the Teachers Book Awards Poetry Prize. Spot Guevara Hero Dog, a beautifully produced short novel for 7-9 year olds with illustrations by Katy Riddell, was published in April 2019. Cherry Moon - Little Poems Big Ideas, Mindful of Nature, an anthology of Zaro's nature poetry with illustrations by Junli Song, was published in May 2019. It was recently rated as one of the top 30 books of the year for children by The Independent (and the only poetry title included in the list). " Exquisitely simple poetry about nature with warm, almost vintage print illustrations to accompany, about a plum tree in spring." 30 BESTCHILDREN'S BOOKS FOR 2019 FROM TODDLERS TO TEENS.
