Tom Lowery is a former honors English teacher and boys’ basketball coach from Mukilteo, Wash., just north of Seattle. He has been married to his wife, Mary for 46 years. Together they have three grown children, Geoff, Nate and Alena who are all married with wonderful children of their own. This is Mr. Lowery’s first book, which was born out of difficult times during his last years as a teacher where five students took their own lives. Tom said about this experience, “I began to notice just before all these suicides occurred that all my students seemed to be feeling higher levels of anxiety and were much more stressed out than ever before.” To help cope with this difficult situation and try to find some answers, Mr. Lowery went back to his own carefree and stress-free childhood where his parents raised him to be independent to deal with life’s ups and downs, wins and losses, and not have to come running to mommy or daddy anytime something didn’t work out. It is his hope that by sharing these stories of his own childhood experiences, teachers, parents and coaches can find some answers as to why kids these days are under so much stress and work to rectify it. In his retirement, Mr. Lowery enjoys wood working, gardening in his large yard, golf, and salmon fishing in Puget Sound. He and Mary also enjoy spending as much time as possible with their grandkids who live in the area.
