T.A. McLaughlin—or Teresa, as she is known today—was born and raised in the remote backwoods of Lee County, Mississippi, where her earliest years were marked by solitude, survival, and the stirrings of imagination. The nearest towns were Saltillo, a tiny community of just over 500, and Tupelo, then a modest Southern city of 15,000. Like the young boy in her acclaimed sci-fi series The Love of the Tayamni, Teresa spent much of her childhood alone, exploring the woods, inventing worlds, and distancing herself from the adults who abused her and the children who bullied her. From an early age, she knew she was different. Her father often joked she must’ve been dropped from another planet. And in a way, he was right. She didn't belong to the world around her—so she began to create her own. When adults asked what she wanted to be, she would say, without hesitation, "an artist in Paris." As she walked the dirt road to her cousins' house, she imagined the rustling leaves were a cheering audience, applauding a star. In her mind, she was Audrey Hepburn or Vivien Leigh, stepping into the spotlight of a Broadway stage. Driven by this vivid inner world, Teresa taught herself the classics, trained as a classical singer, and learned French, German, and Italian. Her passion for music took her to the Koninklijk Conservatorium and launched a professional career that brought her to stages across Europe and the United States. Eventually, she found peace in a quiet, chosen family: she married a loving, kind-hearted man and adopted a daughter—another woman whose soul she recognized as kin. To the outside world, hers may look like a story of resilience and triumph—but the journey was anything but easy. The wounds of childhood abuse left deep scars, and much of her life was spent grappling with pain, self-doubt, and the lingering echoes of a father who tried to break her spirit. Her greatest battle, in many ways, was proving that she could be entirely, unapologetically herself. In 2009, Teresa transitioned from male to female—a transformation that, like much of her life, was both a reclamation and a rebirth. In her writing, Teresa McLaughlin channels her lived experience into mythic narrative. The Love of the Tayamni is more than a science fiction epic; it is a tapestry of survival, identity, transformation, and the search for love—in all its forms.
