My kids are adults now, however my parenting life was just like yours. Some days my kids and I argued all day long. It happens to all of us! One day my 3 yr. old and I were in the middle of a full-blown conflict day. I reached out to hug him to start over, and he pulled away from me. He was afraid of me; I was crushed by his response. In that moment I saw what I looked like to him, and it was powerful. Here was his beloved mom, one of the most trusted people in his world, thundering at him, all in the name of correcting something he didn’t fully understand. He didn’t know why he was wrong because he was in the process of learning why he was wrong. I vowed to change things. But now I had a problem. What was I going to do instead? Timeout wasn’t working. Yelling wasn’t working. A light swat on the diaper wasn’t working. All it was doing causing my beautiful child to fear me. That moment was the birth of my parenting career.
