Antonio and Ida Salvador landed in the San Joaquin Valley, California, just after WWI. They were Ron's grandparents. His father, Albert Salvador, started school in 1933 speaking only Portuguese. At that time all students who didn't speak English were grouped together in one class, so, Ron's dad became friends with the children from South and Central America, mostly Mexico, except that, he was a rather white looking kid from The Azores, Portugal. As a child, Ron often heard his dad tell stories of the friends he made in grammar school and the interesting lives they lead. One story was of a half Mexican, half American Indian athlete named Joaquin Sanches who was the best football player that Ron's dad had ever known. Joaquin had become a local hero in WWII after High School, and then went on to ride bulls and act as bullfighter in the rodeo. It is the story of Joaquin that became the framework for Matadora. Ron wrote the first draft while living in Montana. Ron Now lives in the desert and is seriously considering moving to Central America where he's planning to sell Spanish translations of Matadora at local markets and fiestas in Panama and elsewhere. There he plans to pen the next episode in the adventures of Lupe and Joaquina.
