Robert Rich has made a lasting influence in the world of ambient and electronic music for four decades. Bird Servant represents his first published book of poetry. With detectable influences of David Budbill, Robinson Jeffers, Mary Oliver or Taoist poets like Tu Fu, Rich’s words carry themselves lightly with humor, and he delights in the musical possibilities inherent in language. Yet he also speaks in a distinctly modern voice, ruminates on the human impact upon nature and environment, ponders the illusions of perception, and celebrates the sense of place that grows when we pay attention closely to our world. Best of all, these poems and thought experiments express ecstatic wonder with life, and the mystery we share in the act of existing. Known primarily as a recording artist, Robert Rich studied computer music at Stanford's prestigious CCRMA while earning a degree in Psychology. In 1982 he first performed his legendary Sleep Concerts, all-night shows meant to sustain hypnogogic states in sleeping audiences. His 7-hour DVD Somnium was among the longest continuous pieces of music ever released, with sequels Perpetual and others defining long-form sleep music. Rich has released over 50 albums, ranging from the slow deep ambience of Trances/Drones, to the electro-acoustic world music of Rainforest and Seven Veils, to shadowy cinematic excursions like Stalker and Bestiary. Rich has worked with Steve Roach, Lustmord, Ian Boddy, David Torn, Alio Die, Paul Haslinger, Markus Reuter, Luca Formentini and many others. His sound design graces many films, and as a mastering engineer he has applied his ear to hundreds of albums.
