Robert Lee Murphy is the award-winning author of frontier historical novels set during the turbulent early to mid-nineteenth century years when the United States evolved into the country that stretches today from sea to shining sea. It was known as the period of Manifest Destiny when the nation's visionaries pushed for westward expansion that they believed was an inherent right. In the process, the Americans pushed the Indians and Mexicans aside as they fought to achieve their goal. Robert grew up in Hobbs, New Mexico, before graduating from the University of Oklahoma in 1960. Following college, he served in the U. S. Army for seven years, departing active duty with the rank of captain. For the next thirty-six years he pursued a business career that involved working with national and international institutions on all seven continents, including Antarctica, where Murphy Peak bears his name in recognition of his contributions in supporting polar science. He sold his first magazine article, illustrated with his own photographs, to Backpacker Magazine many years ago. Throughout his business career, he published various technical articles in trade journals, such as Military Engineer. Shortly after retiring, The Gettysburg Magazine published his annotated Civil War cavalry article about the "boy generals." Roundup Magazine, the official journal of Western Writers of America, has published three of his articles about the construction of the first transcontinental railroad. "Races Within a Race: The Building of the First Transcontinental Railroad" was selected as a finalist for the Western Writers of America Stirrup Award for 2020. Robert regularly writes book reviews for Roundup Magazine. Eagle Talons, the first book in The Iron Horse Chronicles trilogy, was awarded a Bronze Will Rogers Medallion in 2015. Bear Claws, book two in the trilogy, won the Wyoming State Historical Society first place award for fiction in 2016. Bear Claws also was awarded a Silver Will Rogers Medallion that same year. Golden Spike, the concluding book in the trilogy, received a Silver Will Rogers Medallion in 2018. Robert's stand-alone historical novel, Bozeman Paymaster: A Tale of the Fetterman Massacre, won a Copper Will Rogers Medallion in 2023. Bozeman Paymaster also received the first place in fiction award from the Wyoming Historical Society that year. Robert is a member of Western Writers of America, the Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators, and the Historical Novel Society.
