Dr. Koontz studies the ancient cultures of Mexico's Gulf Coast in modern-day Veracruz. He became fascinated by these relatively little-known cultures when he began to travel in Mexico and Guatemala studying Maya archaeology and art history. A stop at El Tajín early in his travels enchanted and interested him, and it was only a few years later that he moved his work to Veracruz for good. In addition to the ancient cultures of the Gulf Coast, Prof. Koontz loves the food found all around that sea, from New Orleans to Veracruz to Havana.
