Ralph White enjoyed a longish career in corporate finance, including assignments in Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, Hong Kong, and New York City, with two American banks: American Express and Chase Manhattan, three foreign banks: Standard Chartered, Sumitomo, and WestLB, ultimately retiring as a Senior Vice President at Marsh and McLennan Securities. Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 Mr. White relocated to his hometown of Litchfield, CT and turned to public service and writing. In 2009 Mr. White founded the Columbia Fiction Foundry, a creative writing workshop for alumni of Columbia University, where he earned his Masters of Business Administration. He served as the organization's president for ten years and subsequently as chairman. Mr. White continues to serve the Columbia Fiction Foundry, assisting members with manuscripts, literary agents, and publishing. "Getting Out of Saigon" is the author's account of his assignment as the last American manager of the Chase Manhattan Bank's Saigon branch, when, at the age of 27, he legally adopted all of the banks Vietnamese employees, along with their families, during that city's anarchic final days in April, 1975, in a desperate attempt to rescue them.
